Shard of the Year Contest
'SOTY' (Shard of the Year) is held in memory of Joanne Schrieber, founder of the 2004 North East Sea Glass Festival. Private collectors are given an opportunity to show off some of their collections and win a cash prize. Sponsored by Sea Glass Publishing and the North American Sea Glass Association (NASGA).
A $1,000 cash prize will be given to the # 1 winner in the category of “Over all Beauty.”
Subsequent categories are as follows:
Runner-up to Grand Prize - $100
Pottery/Ceramics - $100
Whimsical/Toys - $100
Bottle Stopper - $100
Most Unusual - $100
Historical - $100
Art Glass - $100
Marbles - $100
Buttons- $100
Figural - $100
- One free entry of one (1) shard per paid admission. An added cost of $5 allows contestants to enter UP to 3 additional shards.
- Board members and their families are not eligible for the Grand Prize.
- Shards should be uncommon colors and show some conditioning/frosting (see below).
- Judges cannot enter the contest. Contestant names will remain concealed from judges.
- The collector, or their assignee, must bring their shard (s) in person (do not mail shards to NASGA).
- The Grand Prize shard will not be eligible for entry in the same event the following year.
- Contestants are responsible for picking up their entries after the contest is over.
- Security will be provided during both days and a security guard will be on hand overnight. NASGA will not be held responsibile for lost or stolen shards.
Entry Process
- Submit entries between the hours of Saturday at noon through Sunday at 1 p.m. at the " Shard of the Year" contest table.
- Entry forms are filled out by contestants, given to an attendant who will place them on a table that corresponds to contestant's last name.
- The shards will be attached to entry form (s) using rubber glue dots.
Return Process
We will do everything to expedite the return process. Please help us by remaining calm and patient during this time. To insure everyone receives their own shard, proper identification will be required.
Judging
- The judging will be determined by industry experts, NASGA board members and sea glass professionals.
- Judging begins at 3pm on Sunday and prizes will be awarded at 4:30pm.
- Contestants should not speak to the judges during the judging process.
- Prize checks will be provided at the event and winners are asked to remain for photos.
** It is in your best interest NOT to have your shards identified by any vendors or staff prior to the contest. This will compromise your chance of winning.
Grading Sea Glass
Color (1st digit)
5 = Orange, Red, Turquoise, Yellow
4 = Teal, Cobalt and Cornflower (blue), Dark Aqua
3 = Aqua, Pink, Purple, Citron, Black, Gray
2 = Soft Blue, Soft Green, Lime Green, Golden Amber
1 = Common colors
Condition (2nd digit)
5 = Entirely frosted surface, with all edges well rounded (no nicks or cracks)
4 = Entirely frosted surface, most (not all) edges rounded
3 = Somewhat frosted surface, most edges rounded
2 = Somewhat frosted surface, some edges rounded
1 = Minor frosted surface, no edges rounded
Value Increasers (+ sign)
In addition to the color and condition classifications, a shard of sea glass with any of the following characteristics has a higher overall value:
- Bubbles or unique lip shards which indicate age prior to 1900
- Pieces with identifiable text or patterns
- Marbles, apothecary stoppers or other figural pieces
- Bottle bottoms that show identifiable text, age or pontil scars
